Chicago Coalition for the Homeless

CCH community organizers will register at least 300 homeless people to vote this fall, with outreach offered at more than 20 Chicago shelters and community sites through Tuesday, October 11.

Sites where we’re registering voters during this National Homeless and Low-Income Voter Week include Breakthrough Urban Ministries, Deborah’s Place, the Ewing Hotel, Franciscan House, IDHS’s 10 S. Kedzie shelter, Madonna House, Aurora University and Bubbleland Laundry, 5101 S. Western Avenue.

Grace period registration and voting also will be available until a day before Election Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Statewide, residents can go online to register themselves or update their registration through October 23, via the Illinois Board of Elections. Read more.

A Cook County judge has ruled against dismissing a lawsuit filed by a homeless man whose belongings were thrown away by a city street crew.

CCH attorneys and their co-counsels sued the city of Chicago in March for illegally destroying property, including vital prescriptions and blankets, belonging to Robert Henderson, 62, when he lived under a viaduct on the Near West Side.

The September 6 ruling by Judge James E. Snyder allows the case to proceed in court. It is one of the first cases filed under the Illinois Bill of Rights for the Homeless Act, enacted three years ago. Read more.

On June 23, CCH awarded $2,500 renewable college scholarships to five new high school graduates who succeeded in school while coping with homelessness. We also presented $2,500 renewal awards to 15 upperclassmen. Thanks to the donors and foundations that fund these scholarships, 50 students received $235,000 through last school year. Watch highlights of the ceremony here.
